Three Weeks Of Hell: The DC Snipers Podcast

The final episode of our #TrueCrime podcast about the #DCSnipers is available on your favorite podcast platforms and in video form on our site and YouTube. Bob Barnard and Melanie Alnwick were two FOX 5 reporters who were covering the #DCSnipers story 20 years ago. The snipers' reign of terror came to an end on October 24, 2002 - shortly after police publicly identified John Allen Muhammad and Lee Boyd Malvo as their prime suspects. Defense attorneys, Thomas Walsh and Mark Petrovich share their experience representing the teen sniper. Survivors and witnesses share what it was like testifying in front of the suspects.

Police take Malvo and Muhammad into custody at a rest stop off I-70 after an exhaustive search. Bob Barnard reports.

The first BOLO (be on the lookout) was issued for John Mohammad and Lee Malvo as the investigation began to zero in after details from Alabama and Washington state came in. Will Thomas reports.

Two women, Mildred Muhammad and Sandy Moose were in unique circumstances throughout the sniper shootings. Mildred was placed into protective custody after authorities named her ex-husband John, the DC sniper. Sandy witnessed the emotional tasks her husband, Montgomery County Police Chief Charles Moose endured during and after the sniper shootings. Bob Barnard and Melanie Alnwick tell the tale of two wives.

By the third week of the sniper shootings, 10 people were shot and 8 of them were killed. Amongst the victims, an FBI analyst, a Ride-On Bus driver and a Florida man who purposely avoided traveling to Washington DC, only to be shot in Ashland, VA. The snipers continue to leave notes, tarot cards and phone calls. As the clues piled up, investigators were able identify the snipers from a previous shooting in Alabama. On October 23, FBI investigators identify the snipers as 41-year-old John Allen Muhamad and 17-year-old Lee Boyd Malvo.

The second week of the sniper shootings just ended, intense fear and anxiety continue to take over the region. The news of the killing spree reaches a national level, from NBA legend Michael Jordan to the President of the United States. As calls flooded with tips with sightings of the snipers, investigators build a task force overnight. Bob Barnard interviews retired ATF special agent, Mike Bouchard; he explains how investigators communicated to the snipers through the media.

In the second week of the DC sniper shootings, the snipers shot their youngest victim: 13-year-old middle school student, Iran Brown. Iran shares how his aunt's quick thinking saved his life and the emotional and physical scars he has from the shooting today. Retired ATF Special Agent Mike Bouchard discusses how a clue left by the snipers and the shooting of a child struck a nerve with investigators.
