Baboon? ESPN reporter's autocorrected tweet a cause for laughter during the Monday monsoon

PHOENIX (KSAZ) -- An autocorrected word turned what was otherwise a mundane tweet into viral material for social media Monday night.

At 9:09 p.m. on Monday, ESPN reporter Pedro Gomez made a tweet on his verified Twitter page about a delay for the Arizona Diamondbacks-Texas Rangers game. At the time, a powerful monsoon storm was battering parts of the Valley.

Yes. Gomez wrote, in the tweet, that a baboon went through town and overloaded the grid, knocking some lights out.

Seven minutes later, Gomez issued a correction, blaming the first tweet on autocorrect.

What was otherwise a mundane tweet about a power outage at Chase Field then went viral. As of 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, Gomez's baboon tweet had 1,800 retweets, and 250 comments, including comments from the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Phoenix Zoo.

Even the Phoenix Suns, whose mascot is a gorilla, weighted in.

By the end of the game, with the Dbacks down in score, they turned the baboon into a rallying cry.

Dbacks still lost, however, 9-5 against the Rangers.

From Monday night and into Tuesday morning, Twitter users weighed in on the unfortunate autocorrect. Gomez himself made light of the tweet, even suggesting that the Diamondbacks sign the baboon.

Ultimately, to prevent a similar mistake in the future, some Twitter users had a suggestion for Gomez.

Afterall, baboons haboobs dust storms are a frequent summer occurrence in Phoenix.
