Severe storms slam parts of DC, Maryland

What we know

The National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm warning for multiple areas in the eastern parts of D.C. and central and southern Maryland. It expired at 6:45 p.m. Tuesday.

The warning covered Anne Arundel, Prince George's, Calvert, and Charles counties. It was in effect until 7:45 p.m. for northwestern St. Mary’s County.

At 6:00 p.m., radar detected severe thunderstorms moving northeast at 50 mph, with a line of storms stretching from Bladensburg to near Dunkirk and the Wicomico River. Wind gusts reached 60 mph, and quarter-sized hail was detected. 

Areas at Risk

Residents in Waldorf, Bowie, Severn, Annapolis, Clinton, College Park, and several other communities, including Leonardtown and Chesapeake Beach, were asked to take immediate precautions.

Officials urged everyone in the affected areas to secure outdoor items, avoid windows, and stay indoors in a sturdy building. 

Tornado warning in Prince George's County

This warning follows an earlier tornado warning for parts of Prince George’s County, including Camp Springs, Oxon Hill, and Hillcrest Heights, which expired at 6:00 p.m. 

Residents should stay alert for updates as severe weather continues to move through the region.
