Tips on how to survive a home invasion

WASHINGTON - "My will to survive must be greater than my adversary's will to kill," said former police officer Derrick Parks who joined FOX 5 Wednesday with tips on what to do if you ever become a victim of a home invasion.

Parks said he was taught that lesson while in the police academy and says it is important to keep it in mind if you are confronted by an intruder in your home.

- Have A Family Plan (secret hiding places, escape routes, barricade room)

- Keep Cell Phone On & Charged

- Be A Good Witness Remember Things About The Assailant

- Know Your Neighbors

- Outdoor Lighting

- Trim Shrubs and Bushes

- Purchase Camera and Alarm System
