Richard Overton 'still living' good' and turning 112 this week
Austin treasure Richard Overton, "America's Oldest Veteran," has recently become the oldest man in the country!
And, he's not slowing down.
Overton is turning 112 on Friday.
"Ask me what y'all need to know. And if I don't know it, I'll sing it to you," Overton told reporters in front of his house on Thursday.
The day before Mr. Overton's 112th birthday, he didn't end up singing for us but he was doing what he loves: sitting on the front porch of his East Austin home smoking cigars and chatting with people.
Though Overton says it has been a little bit hard to light his cigar recently due to some Arthritis, he says he feels fine and he "enjoys himself."
Overton was born in Bastrop County in 1906 and served in the Army for 3 years during WWII.
We asked him about being the oldest veteran in the country and that new distinction, the "oldest man" in the country.
"Funny thing, I didn't know I was going to do that. I feel fine every day. No pain and no aches. A lot of people get up and die. I don't die yet.
Overton's 112th birthday party is tomorrow afternoon on Richard Overton Avenue.
What's next for him? He says he wants to be around next year and the year after that.
