Police search for 3 suspects behind brazen ATM theft attempts at DC businesses (VIDEO)
WASHINGTON - D.C. police have released surveillance video showing two separate, brazen attempts to steal ATMs from District businesses. They're hoping the public can help identify the suspects, whom they believe are responsible for both crimes.
In both cases, the suspects used vehicles to crash into the businesses in an effort to steal their ATM machines.
Investigators say the first incident took place on January 19 just after 1 a.m. at a 7-Eleven in the 200 block of Cedar Street NW. The video shows a pickup truck violently crashing through the wall of the 7-Eleven.
Once inside, police say the three suspects stole an ATM before fleeing the scene. The truck used to crash through the business was later recovered, as were parts of the stolen ATM.
Then, about a month later, police say there was a similar incident on February 20 at about 4:30 a.m. in the 3600 block of 12th Street NE. This time, the suspects again used a truck to break through the wall of a business, but they didn't manage to get away with the ATM. Investigators are still looking for the truck used in that incident.
Police ask anyone who can identify these suspects or who has knowledge of these incidents to take no action, but call the Metropolitan Police Department at (202) 727-9099 or text your tip to the Department's TEXT TIP LINE at 50411.
MPD offers a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to the arrests and convictions of those who commit crimes in the District.
