Police: 2-Year-Old Boy Accidentally Shoots Himself

The investigation continues in the death of an Acworth toddler who died after accidentally shooting himself Tuesday night. It happened at a home on Athena Court.

Neighbors visited the home Wednesday, leaving teddy bears, balloons and flowers in the front yard in honor of the little boy whose life was cut tragically short.

"Oh it really did hurt my heart when I heard that that baby got shot," said neighbor Cleo Ross.

Police said the young victim, his father, and a four year old sibling arrived home around 7:30 p.m. The toddler was alone in his parent's bedroom, the holstered semi-automatic handgun lying on the bed, when he somehow got hold of the weapon and accidentally shot himself.

Acworth police captain Mark Cheatham said, "We're still interviewing people, have certain items that we are going to present for testing, but as it stands now it does appear that this was an accidental shooting."

Police said it's unclear if the father will face charges.
