Metro plans to close 6 stations for more than 3 months in 2019 to rebuild platforms

WASHINGTON - Metro officials have announced plans to close six stations for more than three months in 2019 to rebuild platforms.

Metro said the six stations, including Braddock Road, King Street, Eisenhower Avenue, Huntington, Van Dorn Street, and Franconia-Springfield, will be closed from Memorial Day 2019 to Labor Day 2019.

That would be for a total of 108 days.

Metro said it was planning a three-year project to reconstruct platforms at 20 outdoor Metro stations. Officials said the repairs were needed to "address structural deficiencies after decades of exposure to the elements."

The project is estimated to cost between $300-400 million, according to Metro.

Officials said their recent strategy of single-tracking at Metro stations where platforms were being rebuilt resulted in years of construction an increased safety risks.

Metro said the following station platforms were to be reconstructed between 2020 and 2021: West Hyattsville, College Park, Greenbelt, Rhode Island Avenue, Vienna, Dunn Loring, West Falls Church, East Falls Church, Cheverly, Landover, New Carrollton, Addison Road, and Arlington Cemetery.
