Montgomery County police investigating after 3-month-old drowns

The mother of a three-month-old child has been taken into custody after the infant was pronounced dead at a hospital in Montgomery County Sunday, according to police.

A mom in Chevy Chase, Maryland, has been charged with the murder of her 3-month-old baby Sunday.

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue responded to a home in the 7300 block of Summit Avenue in Chevy Chase around 12:15 p.m. Sunday for a report about an infant drowning.

When they arrived, they found a three-month-old victim and took the child to the hospital where they were later pronounced dead.

Mackenzie R. Colgan, 37, was taken into custody at the scene. Court documents show she has been charged with first-degree murder.

Court documents say that Colgan told family she was going to give the baby a bath. Twenty minutes later, she came downstairs and told the father, John Volpe, that the baby was dead. Volpe found the baby unresponsive in the bathtub and attempted CPR while Colgan called 911.

Investigators say that Colgan told them she woke up Sunday morning with a plan to "end everything" by killing herself and her family.

Colgan reportedly told investigators she intended to jump out of the second-story window after drowning the 3-month-old, but decided not to jump and instead went downstairs to tell Volpe what happened.
