Man dies in police custody in Gaithersburg

An investigation is underway after a man died while in police custody.

A man died while in police custody in Gaithersburg, Maryland, according to officials. 

What we know

On Tuesday around 10 p.m., the Gaithersburg Police Department responded to a report of a man causing a disturbance. Officers found a man covered in blood and acting erratically in front of an apartment building in the 300 block of N. Summit Avenue. 

The man stood up and walked away from the apartment building. Officers then grabbed him and placed him on the ground, holding him there while waiting for fire and rescue personnel, according to authorities. 

He then became unconscious and stopped breathing. Officers administered emergency medical aid before fire and rescue units arrived. He was taken to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead two days later. 

What we don't know

The Independent Investigations Division (IID) of the Maryland Office of the Attorney General has opened an investigation into the death. The cause of death has not been released. 

The name of the deceased has also not been released. 

Body-worn camera footage is generally made public within 20 days of an incident, according to the Maryland Attorney General's Office – but there may be situations where more time is needed.
