If DC hosted the Olympic Games, where would the events be played?
WASHINGTON - All eyes are on Rio de Janeiro - the host of the 2016 Olympic Games.
But every few years we hear D.C.'s name mentioned when talking about possible U.S. host cities.
The most recent push to bring the Olympic Games to the D.C. region ended in 2015 when Los Angeles won the bid to become the U.S. candidate city for the 2024 Summer Olympics.
But if D.C. were to someday play host to the Olympic Games - where would the events be held?
Back in 2014, when D.C. was still in the running for the 2024 Games, existing locations - combined with future sites - were identified by the Washington Post.
A possible site for the main Olympic Stadium would have been where RFK Stadium currently stands, the Post said. The Olympic Village may have found a fit in the area of Hill East. Beach Volleyball could have found a home in Hains Point and a new facility for tennis may have worked out in the southeast.
The proposed ideas also called for using existing facilities like the Verizon Center and the Comcast Center for gymnastics competitions. Nearby Annapolis was a possibility for sailing events and iconic locations across downtown D.C. would have been the backdrops for the marathon and triathlon.
Further back, in 2002, D.C. was considered as a possible host city for the 2012 Games. Those games were eventually awarded to London - but early proposals called for making use of venues along the Baltimore-Washington corridor. Possible venue spots considered in that proposal including the home stadiums of the Baltimore Ravens and Orioles, convention centers in both cities as well as FedEx Field and what would later be known as the Verizon Center.
The D.C. region might one day see the games played on its turf - but if it ever does - will the area's transit systems and roads be up to the challenge. The games would probably bring more than 500,000 or more spectators and athletes to the region for nearly a month. It's already stressed transportation networks would definitely given an Olympic-sized challenge.
