The Carters raised four children, each carving distinct paths while upholding the family’s dedication to improving the world.

  • John William "Jack" Carter (b. 1947), the eldest, built a career in law and business and ventured into politics, running for the U.S. Senate in Nevada in 2006. Jack has two children, Jason and Sarah, from his first marriage, and two stepchildren, John Chuldenko and Sarah Chuldenko Reynolds, from his second wife, Elizabeth Brasfield.
  • James Earl "Chip" Carter III (b. 1950) played key roles in his father’s political campaigns and worked as a political consultant. Chip’s son, James Carter IV, gained national attention in 2012 for uncovering the "47 percent" video that became a turning point in the presidential election. Chip also has a daughter, Margaret Alicia Carter, and a stepson, Casey Payne Gallagher, from subsequent marriages.
  • Donnel Jeffrey "Jeff" Carter (b. 1952) co-founded Computer Mapping Consultants, blending technology and business. He and his late wife, Annette, had three sons: Joshua, James, and Jeremy, who passed away in 2015 at the age of 28.
  • Amy Lynn Carter (b. 1967), the youngest, became a public figure as a child during her father’s presidency. As an adult, she advocates for social justice and human rights. Amy resides in Atlanta with her husband, James Wentzel, and their son, Hugo.

The Carters' grandchildren carry the torch

Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter’s grandchildren have continued the family’s legacy, achieving prominence in their own right.

  • Jason Carter, son of Jack Carter, is a former Georgia state senator and was the Democratic nominee for governor in 2014. He currently serves as chairman of The Carter Center’s board of trustees, overseeing its mission to advance human rights and diplomacy.
  • James Carter IV, son of Chip Carter, gained recognition for exposing the "47 percent" video that became a turning point in the 2012 presidential race.
