Health alert after case of bacterial meningitis reported at DC elementary school
WASHINGTON - The D.C. Department of Health is warning parents to be on the lookout for signs of meningitis after a case of bacterial meningitis was reported at Burrville Elementary School in the Northeast.
The bacterial infection causes inflammation in the lining surrounding the brain and spinal cord. Symptoms include headaches, stiffness in the neck, shoulder or back, high fever and an uneasy feeling when looking at bright lights.
Officials say symptoms of meningococcal meningitis can develop two to 10 days after exposure to an ill person.
Meningococcal meningitis is contagious and can cause severe illness or death. Anyone with concerns is asked to contact D.C.’s Department of Health at 202-442-5893.
