Teen connected to closure of Fredericksburg City Public Schools arrested in New Jersey

A juvenile suspect wanted for trespassing at a Fredericksburg high school was arrested in New Jersey on Friday, police say.

What we know:

According to authorities, Fasihullah Safar, of Fairfax County, was taken into custody around 5 p.m. in Florence, New Jersey.

Fredericksburg police were alerted to the search for Safar by the FBI's Washington Field Office and determined that he had trespassed on the grounds James Monroe High School earlier this week.

Investigators also reported that they believed Safar stole a car from Stafford County late Thursday evening. That car was then found out of state Friday afternoon.

Schools Closed:

Fredericksburg police said, based on information received from the FBI, there was an elevated concern for safety at schools in the district. They alerted Fredericksburg City Public School leaders, who then made the decision to close all schools on Friday.

While officials say no direct threat to the Fredericksburg City Public School system was reported, they added that the schools were closed for "safety and security reasons." The closure included staff members.

What we don't know:

It's not clear what kind of threat Safar posed, or why he was initially on the campus of James Monroe High School earlier this week.

Authorities also have not released any information on charges brought against Safar at this time.
