Dog stolen during armed carjacking, owners say
A dog was being cared for by a dog sitter when she was allegedly pulled over by people with guns who took the dog from the back seat. Now the owners are trying to get him back.
PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY, Md. - Police in Prince George’s County are asking the public to be on the lookout for a dog that was stolen from a dog sitter by two armed suspects Friday.
According to police, the three-year-old pup named Duke was taken around 9:10 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 22.
The D.C. couple who owns Duke tells FOX 5 that they were returning home from a trip and had been texting with the sitter in the hours leading up to when they were supposed to get Duke. But then, the sitter stopped responding.
"We knew something was wrong, she’s always so responsible. It was really unlike the sitter to not hear from her for a couple of hours, so we’re just beside ourselves waiting," one of the owners said.
Unfortunately, the couple got the news they didn't want to hear around 1 a.m. The sitter called to tell them that Duke had been stolen.
The sitter told the couple she was stopping for food on the way to meet them to drop off their dog. The restaurant was apparently closed, so she pulled over in the 10100 block of Livingston Road in Fort Washington to check her GPS. That’s when she said the two suspects, at least one of whom was armed with a handgun, approached her car and began banging on it.
Then they reached in and stole Duke from the back seat.
"She has a German shepherd, her own German shepherd in the front seat and that dog gets very defensive. Very aggressive, so they’re not able to get in the front seat. They get the back doors open, where Duke was sitting, grab him and that’s the last they were able to see him," Duke's other owner told FOX 5.
Duke is about 80 pounds with black fur and pointy ears. The couple is asking for the safe return of their dog, no questions asked.
Prince George’s County Crime Solvers is offering a cash reward of up to $2,500 for information that leads to an arrest.
