DC plane crash: Loudoun County student was among passengers on flight 5342, district says
WASHINGTON - A Loudoun County Public Schools student was on the plane that collided with an Army helicopter over the Potomac River Wednesday night, the school says.
At this time, officials do not believe anyone survived the midair collision between an American Airlines passenger jet and a military helicopter over Ronald Reagan National Airport.
According to officials, the helicopter apparently flew into the flight path of the plane while it was landing at the airport. The debris of both aircrafts sank into the icy river below.
The American Airlines jet had 60 passengers and four crew members. Three soldiers were aboard the helicopter. Search and rescue efforts are ongoing.
"Unimaginable Loss"
What we know:
A letter was sent to parents and families within the district, expressing condolences for the students and families affected by the loss.
"This unimaginable loss has deeply affected our community, and with great sorrow, we have learned that multiple victims were former LCPS students. Many other Loudoun families have also been impacted, and we extend our deepest condolences to all those grieving in the wake of this tragedy," the letter read.
What we don't know:
The school district did not provide any specifics about the student or what school they attended.
They did offer resources to students, teachers and families, saying mental health professionals are available and that teachers can utilize the Employee Assistance Program (EAP).
"Loss of this magnitude can bring a wave of emotions. Please know that you are not alone. We are here to support you, and we will navigate this difficult time together."
