Bad driving, traffic stop leads to nearly $2 million drug bust

Doraville police found nearly 4,000 pounds of marijuana inside a box truck during a traffic stop Monday night.

Investigators said a Doraville police officer pulled over a GMC box truck after spotting the vehicle driving on the wrong side of the road. The driver, identified as Alejandro Perez, also failed to stop at a stop sign on Buena Vista Avenue, according to police.

Investigators said Perez told the officer he didn't have a driver's license and that's when he was taken into custody.

Prior to the vehicle being towed, the officer asked the driver if he had anything valuable in his truck and Perez said he wasn't sure what was inside. Doraville police said when officers opened the rear of the truck, they found "numerous bundles of marijuana."

According to police, 169 bundles of marijuana, worth in between $1.6 and $1.9 million, were inside the truck.

Perez was charged with trafficking in marijuana.

Doraville police said they are pretty confident "this would exceed personal use."
