Bold vision for RFK site includes timber stadium

A Boston architecture firm has unveiled renderings for a new stadium at the RFK site in D.C. FOX 5's Homa Bash has the story.

A Boston-based architecture firm is already making its pitch for what a new Commanders stadium could look like in D.C.

These are some of the first renderings offered for the future of the RFK stadium site, done by KaTO Architecture, which is not formally contracted with the city or the team.

Lead architect Kyle Murphy shared the bold vision with FOX 5, saying that it isn't an official proposal, but rather a way to show the possibilities the site has to offer.

The renderings depict an enclosed stadium made of mass timber — which would be the first of its kind — surrounded by housing and mixed-use development.

Murphy said the prime location near the National Mall meant they wanted to think big.

"We don't have a dedicated national venue here and that would be the ideal place to do that - when you think about Wembley Stadium in England, Mexico has Estadio Azteca," Murphy said. "We've been trying to pitch this as something that could be about national pride beyond just being of value to a specific team or certain city."

Biden signs bill giving DC control of RFK Stadium, Bowser says: 'It's officially law'

President Joe Biden has signed the bill that gives D.C. control of the RFK Stadium site, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser says, effectively opening up the opportunity for the District to lure the Commanders back to town.

President Joe Biden signed over control of the RFK stadium site to the District of Columbia just before leaving office.

A spokesperson for Mayor Muriel Bowser referred FOX 5 to a statement she made on January 6th following the D.C. Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium Campus Revitalization Act (H.R. 4984).

"It is a good day for D.C. when we finally have control of our own destiny at the RFK campus. We are ready and optimistic about unlocking the full potential of this space, and with more than 170 acres of land we can do it all – deliver housing, economic opportunity, green space, recreation, sports, and more," Mayor Bowser said.
