3 killed in La Plata car crash, Charles County Sheriff's Office says

A car crash in Charles County killed three people in Charles County early Tuesday morning, according to officials.

The Charles County Sheriff's Office said a Mercedes crashed while traveling southbound on Rosehill Road just past Hawthorne Road in La Plata at about 12:55 a.m.

Investigators said the car veered off the road, struck a tree and caught fire.

A good Samaritan passing by was able to pull the driver away from the vehicle before it exploded, according to police.

"We turned back around and drove past the scene. We saw a guy yelling and saw a body right beside the car so we pulled his body away from the car and into the street until the police officer came. We stayed there until the police officer pulled up," Kar Benjamin told FOX 5.

Officials said when firefighters put the flames out they discovered two bodies inside the vehicle. The identities of the victims inside the vehicle were not available.

"I didn't know there was anyone else in the car. I thought he was by himself because I kept asking him if anyone else was in the car with him and he couldn't tell me," Benjamin said.

The driver, identified by officials as 28-year-old Eric Moss of La Plata, was flown to the hospital but later died from his injuries.
