2 men dead after vehicle drives into Chantilly pond: police
FAIRFAX COUNTY, Va. - Two men are dead after their car was driven into a Chantilly pond, where they drowned.
The incident happened around 7:30 a.m. Thursday by the 3900 block of Centerview Drive outside of the Wingate by Wyndham hotel in Chantilly, roughly several miles from Dulles airport. Fairfax County officers found the car submerged in a pond and recovered two people.
The two people were identified Thursday as 55-year-old Karna Khadka, who was driving the car. The passenger was identified by police Thursday as 20-year-old Nischal Bhatta. Both were from Chantilly and declared dead on the scene.
According to police, all signs point to the incident as an accident. Detectives believe the car was being driven in the parking lot when it went over the curb and down a hill into the pond. The circumstances surrounding the crash are still being investigated.
The two men tried to climb out of the backseat, according to a dispatch call.
"Eyewitnesses are reporting two still in the car, completely submerged. We have no visual on the occupants. Go ahead and start dive team," part of the call said.
A group of people who said they knew the men who died stopped by the pond Thursday.
"They work with us for maybe 4 or 5 years," one woman said. "He’s supposed to be at work.
