14-year-old arrested in Annandale for setting man on fire, Fairfax County police say

ANNANDALE, Va. - A 14-year-old boy was arrested after authorities say he set a man on fire in Annandale on Sunday.

Fairfax County police said they responded to the scene after a man was assaulted by several people, all believed to be juveniles, and set on fire in the 4500 block of Commons Drive at about 2:45 p.m.

When officers arrived at the scene a man was located with burns on his clothing and backpack. Investigators said the man, who was sleeping at the time of the attack, awoke to the juveniles setting his backpack on fire.

Detectives got a description of the suspects and the 14-year-old boy was arrested and taken to the Fairfax County Juvenile Detention Center. He was facing attempted robbery and malicious wounding charges.

Another teenager police had in custody after being at the scene on Sunday was let go, but police say he may face charges later.

Authorities were working to identify the other juveniles involved in the attack. Investigators said they believed the suspects had planned to rob the man.

Police say they do not believe this was a gang-motivated, but some of suspects have gang ties. However, police say they are not connected to MS-13.

The victim was treated for injuries to his upper body and was released from the hospital.
