Isolated thunderstorms Sunday with severe weather threat for Memorial Day
WASHINGTON - As the weekend closes out, the D.C. area will remain in an unsettled weather pattern through Memorial Day.
Sunday afternoon will be hot and humid. The high is expected to reach around 87 degrees with an overnight low around 70 degrees.
There is a chance of isolated thunderstorms through the late afternoon and evening. Not everyone will get them.
The warm and humid air mass will stay in place through Monday and the Storm Prediction Center has the D.C. region under a Slight Risk of Severe Weather for the holiday.
There is potential for damaging winds as the primary threat. There is also the possibility of large hail and isolated tornadoes.
This weather event is expected to be more widespread than any showers or isolated storms on Saturday or Sunday. As of now, anywhere from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. would be favorable for the storms as a strong cold front moves in and crosses our region.
With regard to heavy rain, the eastern areas — particularly Central and Northeastern Maryland — would be at greatest risk of flooding with thunderstorms.
Looking ahead, Tuesday will be dry with sunshine but we will see another chance for showers and thunderstorms through Wednesday afternoon and evening before sunshine takes over Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
