Extreme temperatures across the DC region as heat wave continues

WASHINGTON - Another hot, hazy and humid day as temperatures climb into the upper 90s with triple digit heat indexes possible.

FOX 5's Mike Thomas says a pop-up storm is possible later in the day Wednesday as the heat wave continues. More storm chances are possible on Thursday, he added. "Honestly, it would probably just make things worse because rain would evaporate quickly and then you would have more humidity in the atmosphere," Thomas said.

A Heat Advisory is in place for much of the D.C. region from noon until 8 p.m. Wednesday.

Thomas say later this week a cold front will bring some heat relief along with some storms.

Heat Advisory--Take Action! A Heat Advisory is issued within 12 hours of the onset of extremely dangerous heat conditions. The general rule of thumb for this Advisory is when the maximum heat index temperature is expected to be 100° or higher for at least 2 days, and night time air temperatures will not drop below 75°; however, these criteria vary across the country, especially for areas that are not used to dangerous heat conditions. Take precautions to avoid heat illness. If you don't take precautions, you may become seriously ill or even die.

During extremely hot and humid weather, your body's ability to cool itself is challenged. When the body heats too rapidly to cool itself properly, or when too much fluid or salt is lost through dehydration or sweating, body temperature rises and you or someone you care about may experience a heat-related illness. It is important to know the symptoms of excessive heat exposure and the appropriate responses. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention provides a list of warning signs and symptoms of heat illness, and recommended first aid steps.
