DC snow storm: Hour-by-hour forecast, how much to expect
WASHINGTON - Snow is on the way for the D.C. region Sunday night into Monday, prompting a Winter Storm Warning that goes into effect at 10 p.m.
FOX 5's Gwen Tolbart says as of Sunday morning, five to nine inches of snow is expected for the D.C. area. The storm system is expected to bring snow, a wintry mix and winds, impacting visibility on the roads.
"If you don't have to go out in these conditions, don't go. Try to stay inside. It's really going to be hazardous out there, especially on untreated surfaces," said Tolbart.
Winter storm warning issued for DMV
A winter storm warning has been issued for D.C., central Maryland, and Northern Virginia by the National Weather Service. The warning will remain in effect from 10 p.m. Sunday evening to 1 a.m. Tuesday morning, according to officials.
When will the snow start?
Expected snowfall at 3 p.m. Sunday
Areas to the southwest of the D.C. region will begin to see snowfall after 3:00 p.m. on Sunday.
Expected snowfall at 6 p.m. Sunday
From 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., areas in central Virginia, including the Alleghenies and the central Shenandoah, will begin to see snowfall.
Expected snowfall at 9 p.m. Sunday
The D.C. and Baltimore metro areas as well as southern Maryland and northern Shenandoah are expected to see snowfall starting sometime between 9:00 p.m. and midnight Sunday night.
Expected snowfall at 10 p.m. Sunday
The Winter Storm Warning goes into effect at 10 p.m. That's when the flurries will pick up and the heaviest snowfall will continue overnight for the D.C. and Baltimore metros.
Expected snowfall at midnight
After midnight, the far northeastern Maryland area is expected to see snowfall.
How much snow is expected?
The latest forecast from the National Weather Service shows a widespread eight to 12 inches of snow possible across much of the DMV region.
In the more central D.C. area, snowfall totals are expected to max out at around 10 inches. Areas south of D.C. will have a better chance of a mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain.
Temperatures are expected to remain in the low 30s and 20s. The wind chill across the D.C. region is looming in the 10s.
According to the FOX 5 Weather Team, heavy snow is expected Monday morning which will drastically impact traffic and travel.
What to expect with travel
As the snowfall arrives Sunday night into Monday, travel will certainly be impacted. Any untreated roads, bridges, and overpasses will become slick and dangerous for travel.
Tolbart warns, if you do not have to venture out, then plan to just stay inside once the snow arrives.
Some areas could see a wintry mix, including sleet, ice or freezing rain. Pedestrians will also have to walk with caution.
If you have plans to catch a flight, there is a very good chance of flight cancelations or delays due to the inclement weather. Call ahead and plan accordingly.
The models are still showing significant winter weather. Snow bursts, any shift in the storm's track, and the amount of mix in any given area will affect snow totals.
