A note from Chad Ricardo: The FOX 5 Top 5 is not a power ranking. Accordingly, it does not serve as a representation of who I necessarily believe would win if two teams met on a neutral field, rather the FOX 5 Top 5, ranks each team — public, private and public charter — as that team competes against its equal level of competition.
Here is a breakdown of this week’s FOX 5 Top 5:
- Freedom Eagles, (8-0)Week 9 Result: Defeated Potomac SeniorThe Freedom Eagles continued their dominant season by defeating Potomac by a final score of 65-0. The victory was the 6th consecutive game in which Freedom notched the 60-point mark and the 4th of the six in which they held their opponent scoreless. It is true that the Eagles have not played the toughest schedule to date, if style points matter, Freedom has scored them in bunches.
- Quince Orchard Cougars (8-0)Week 9 Result: Defeated NorthwestThe Cougars finished off the Jags by a final score of 34-21 for their 38th consecutive victory. Often thought of as a "running team", Quince Orchard’s aerial attack is beginning to take flight. Quarterback Nino Marzullo, is clicking on all cylinders and his primary target, Tavahri Groves, may very well be the most dangerous playmaker in all of the DMV.
- Good Counsel (6-1)Week 9 Result: BYEThe Good Counsel Falcons were idle in week 9, but undoubtedly preparing for a WCAC showdown with rival Gonzaga. A Good Counsel victory on Saturday night will secure them the top seed in the conference playoffs.
- DeMatha (7-1)Week 9 Result: Defeated St. John’sAnother week, another close game and test of character for the DeMatha Stags. Denzel Gardner threw a touchdown pass to Cody Williams in overtime to secure the home victory for coach Bill McGregor and crew. It was the second consecutive overtime game for the Stags and the third such of the season. DeMatha improved to 2-1 in those contests.
- Wise (7-1)Week 9 Result: Defeated BowieFresh off a victory over Flowers, Wise bullied Bowie by a final score of 45-0. The win was the Puma’s 7th consecutive and as their young offense continues to mature each week, their defense remained dominant, posting their 5th shutout of the season.
