Report: Redskins agree to trade to get QB Alex Smith from Chiefs
WASHINGTON - The Washington Redskins have agreed on a trade with the Kansas City Chiefs for quarterback Alex Smith, according to multiple reports.
ESPN reports the Redskins are giving up a third-round pick and cornerback Kendall Fuller for Smith.
Smith has one year remaining on his contract with a 2018 cap number of $20.6 million. However, ESPN's Adam Schefter and Chris Mortensen also report that Washington has reached a four-year contract extension with the 33-year-old quarterback.
The trade cannot be officially completed until the start of the new league year on March 14.
This deal makes it quite likely Kirk Cousins will leave the Redskins as he will be a free agent this offseason after spending his entire six-year career in Washington.
With Smith, the Redskins will be bringing in a veteran quarterback with 13 years of NFL experience. Smith spent the last five seasons as Kansas City's starter and put up his best passing numbers in 2017. He posted career highs in passing yardage (4,042), passing touchdowns (26) and passer rating (104.7).
Smith was originally drafted with the first overall pick in the 2005 NFL Draft by the San Francisco 49ers.
