Commanders make NFL playoffs: What's next for the team?

The Commanders are back in the postseason for the first time since 2020, and while that has fans excited, just getting there is not enough. Winning is the goal—something they have not done since January 2006, when they defeated the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the 2005 NFC Wild Card Game.

Washington currently holds the 6th seed and can secure that position with a win in Dallas against the Cowboys to close out the season on Sunday. Should that happen, they would be on the road to either Los Angeles to face the NFC West Division winners, the Rams, or down to Florida to face the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Head Coach Dan Quinn said seeding is significant, and they plan to go all out, which means no rest for the veterans this weekend.

If they fall short against the Cowboys—a team they lost to earlier this season—and the Packers (11-5) tie or beat the Bears, Washington would drop to the 7th seed. That would mean a first-round matchup against the NFC East winners, the Eagles, in Philadelphia.  The division rivals have only played each other once before in the postseason, the 1990’s Wild Card round of which Washington won 20-6.
