ZooLights kicks off at the National Zoo
WASHINGTON - Friday marked the start of ZooLights at the Smithsonian National Zoo. This is the tenth year for the free holiday event that features more than 500,000 lights.
ZooLights runs 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. from November 25 through January 1, with the exception of Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Admission is free and the zoo is accessible from the Woodley Park-Zoo/Adams Morgan Metro stop. For those driving, parking costs $22.
While most of the animal exhibits are closed at night, there are a few open including the Small Mammal House, Reptile Discovery Center and Think Tank.
The zoo's website highlights several additional attractions:
- The Smithsonian's National Zoo Choo-Choo: take a merry tour through the Zoo on a trackless train that whisks guests all around the Great Cats exhibit and features gorgeous views of the Zoo's holiday light displays.
- Snow-less Tubing: take the plunge down one of our 150-foot-long tracks--no snow necessary! (weather permitting)
- Speedwell Foundation Conservation Carousel: hop on to your choice of 58 animal figurines, as the carousel highlights the Zoo's incredible research and success stories. As one of the few carousels in the world powered by solar energy, thanks to a generous donation by Pepco Energy Services, the carousel is a new spin on conservation.
This year's special nights include:
- BrewLights, Dec. 1
- Military Night, Dec. 2
- Date Night, Dec. 8.
- Member Week is Dec. 3 through Dec. 10.
