DC row home undergoing renovations collapses, killing construction worker
WASHINGTON - A construction worker was killed when a home undergoing renovations collapsed in Northwest D.C. Monday morning.
According to D.C. Fire and EMS, major renovations were being done at the two-story row home in the 1100 Block of V Street, NW, when the structure collapsed around 9:30 a.m., trapping a worker inside.
D.C. Fire and EMS immediately responded to the scene and attempted to extricate the worker but said they had to proceed with extreme caution due to precarious condition of structure.
Crews tried for hours to save the worker but eventually, rescue efforts were suspended after it was deemed unsafe to continue.
This afternoon, family identified the worker as 36-year-old Edgar Sinfuentes.
Chief John A. Donnelly, Sr. said the collapse was a "pretty substantial collapse" and that it happened while crews were actively working on the structure.
Right now, investigators say they don't know what caused the collapse. Officials added that the adjacent attached row may also be compromised.
