LANDOVER HILLS, Md. - Police in Prince George's County are investigating their first homicide of the year after a woman was found dead inside of her home from gunshot wounds following reports of shots fired nearby.
The incident was reported around 11:30 p.m. on New Year's Day in the 7400 block of Varnum Street in the Landover Hills area.
Investigators believe the home was targeted, but they say the motive is unclear.

Neighbors told FOX 5 that the victim - 56-year-old Filomena Vasquez - raised five children in the home, and that she had numerous grandchildren.
She and her husband had lived in the house since at least 2003.

Officers say the woman was pronounced dead on the scene. FOX 5's Melanie Alnwick says bullet holes were found in the kitchen window of the home where the woman was shot. A Lincoln Navigator that also containted bullet holes was towed from the scene.
A police radio broadcast said family members initiated CPR while waiting for the police, and no one saw a gunman.
However, a later broadcast said a man dressed in black was seen running down Varnum Street after the shooting.
