Winter Weather Advisory for most of DC region
WASHINGTON - A fast-moving clipper system will bring the possibility of a brief period of rain, snow, and freezing rain to the Washington, D.C. region on Tuesday morning.
A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued from 5 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Christmas Eve for D.C. and surrounding areas of Maryland and northern Virginia.
When will the clipper impact the DC region?
FOX 5’s Taylor Grenda says Monday will be cold with a slight breeze in the air. Expect temperatures in the mid-30s by the afternoon. The overnight hours should stay dry, according to Grenda. The concern lies in the early Tuesday morning hours.
The clipper system is expected to impact the area during a short window on Tuesday. However, the timing of the storm will likely affect the morning commute. Roads, especially bridges and overpasses, will likely become slick.
How much Precipitation is expected?
Precipitation is expected to begin as light freezing rain early Tuesday morning to the west, moving toward the Interstate 95 corridor just before sunrise. Some snow could mix in at times, particularly along and north of Interstate 70, according to the National Weather Service. Precipitation should transition to a mix of rain and freezing rain late Tuesday morning, before ending early Tuesday afternoon.
The National Weather Service indicates that total ice accumulation could range from a light glaze to a few hundredths of an inch. A dusting to one-tenth of an inch of snow is possible in some areas.
Grenda forecasts a cold and dry Christmas on Wednesday, with dry conditions expected throughout the week. Showers are possible over the weekend.
