A national day of observance has been declared for Thursday, Jan. 9, to honor former President Jimmy Carter, who died Dec. 29 at age 100.
What we know:
The Postal Service will suspend regular mail delivery, retail services and office activity on Jan. 9.
There will be limited package delivery service on that day to ensure the organization does not experience any negative impacts to its package delivery operations.
All USPS facilities are included in the national day of observance and will be closed, except as needed for limited package delivery service.
Normal mail service will resume on Friday, Jan. 10.
Additionally, USPS facilities are required to fly the U.S. flag at half-staff through sunset on Wednesday, Jan. 29, to honor Carter.

There’s no official criteria for declaring a National Day of Mourning, and they aren’t limited to the deaths of current and former U.S. presidents.
American flags at the White House, public buildings, military bases, naval ships and U.S. embassies around the world are ordered to be flown at half-staff to honor Carter for 30 days after his death.

He will be laid to rest beside his beloved wife, Rosalynn Carter, on Jan. 9 in Plains. Before that, his body was transported to The Carter Center where Carter will lie in repose and the public will be able to pay their respects.
On Jan. 7, he will be transported to Washington, D.C., where he will lie in state and the public will be allowed to pay their respects once again. After a state funeral on Jan. 9, he will be immediately transported back to Plains where he will be buried in a private ceremony.
