WASHINGTON - A deep freeze is setting in throughout much of the region a day after a 'bomb cyclone' brought blizzard-like conditions to Maryland's Eastern Shore and Delaware and impacted other parts of Maryland, Washington D.C. and Virginia.
The coastal winter storm dumped ankle deep snow on the popular resort towns of Ocean City, Maryland and Rehoboth Beach, Del. Wind gusts approaching 50 mph were recorded during the day on Thursday.
Dozens of schools remained closed on Friday around the metro area largely due to the extreme cold. Maryland, D.C. and parts of Northern Virginia experienced sub-zero wind chills and were placed under advisories and warnings early Friday.
Water main breaks were reported across the region Friday. FOX 5's Melanie Alnwick reported live from a break that created an icy mess and blocked the roadway near 27th Street and I Street in Northwest D.C.
FOX 5's Mike Thomas said the region can expect the extreme cold to last through the weekend as cold arctic air from the north stays in the region. Temperatures in the 20s will last through the weekend with a warmup into the 40s expected later next week.
