WASHINGTON - The unrelenting wet weather walloped the D.C. region Wednesday as waves of rain and thunderstorms moved across the area.
The National Weather Service issued a brief tornado warning for southern St. Mary's County, but so far, the agency has not determined whether it made landfall.
Severe thunderstorms worked their way into the northern neck of Virginia, crossing the Potomac River.

DC region weather: Flood watch, tornado warning, and thunderstorms
Flood watches are in effect through Wednesday evening and FOX 5's Caitlin Roth says the D.C. region can expect to see heavy thunderstorms through rush hour.
During the evening commute, the National Weather Service says that highs will be in the upper 50s and northeast winds could reach around 10 mph with gusts up to 20 mph.
At night, the D.C. region will be mostly cloudy with showers likely and a slight chance of thunderstorms in the evening. Temperatures will be around 40 degrees.
The rain arrived early, making for a slow-moving morning commute with reduced visibility on the roadways.
The Flood Watch remains in effect until 6 p.m. for Washington, D.C., most of Maryland, and parts of Virginia as multiple rounds of showers and possible thunderstorms could produce flooding concerns.
