Virginia under state of emergency: Snow, ice, and freezing temps on the way
What we know
RICHMOND, Va. - Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin has declared a state of emergency as a significant winter storm is expected to bring snow, freezing rain, and dangerously cold temperatures to the Commonwealth starting Sunday.
The governor is urging residents, visitors, and travelers to take precautions and adjust plans as needed.
"I am declaring a state of emergency for the incoming winter storm currently forecasted to impact Virginia starting Sunday," Youngkin said in a statement. "If your post-holiday travel plans have you leaving Sunday, I encourage you to adjust those plans to leave on Saturday. If you find yourself needing to be on the roadways, please heed any warnings and make sure you are keeping yourselves and others safe."

When will it snow in Virginia?
The storm is expected to begin Sunday afternoon and continue into Monday, with snow and freezing rain forecasted to impact travel across much of the state.
Following the storm, temperatures are predicted to remain below freezing through much of next week. Coastal areas may also experience high winds, with Gale Watches in effect for Friday night through Saturday.
State agencies mobilize
The Virginia Department of Emergency Management is coordinating with local governments and state agencies to monitor conditions and respond as needed. Emergency response assets and supplies are on standby, and the state emergency operations center will be activated to manage storm-related activities.
VDOT pre-treating roads
The Virginia Department of Transportation is pre-treating roads and bridges in preparation for icy conditions and is urging travelers to monitor forecasts and advisories. Motorists are encouraged to use the 511 Virginia system for real-time road and traffic updates and to limit travel during the storm.
