A frightening and violent attack on a comedian in South Carolina was all caught on camera.

Comedian Steve Brown was performing at the Comedy House in Columbia, South Carolina on Sunday when a man jumped on stage and assaulted him, FOX 5 has learned.

FOX 5 was told the attacker was in the front row before he jumped on the stage and attacked Brown with a mic stand and stool.

Video shows the onslaught continuing for some time until two people sprint to Brown's aid as he dodged the attacker.

The video, which has been viewed more than 720,000 times on Facebook, shows the need for more security at comedy clubs, Brown said in a post on Instagram.

"This unprovoked attacked that happened to me tonight is a reminder of why these comedy clubs should have well equipped professional security to protect us entertainers who bring their club so much money," Brown wrote on Instagram. "I thank God for looking out for me and giving my old a** the ability to bob and weave because this could have ended in a horrible way."

Brown also posted a photo of what appeared to be a significant gash to his arm, which he said was caused by the mic stand.

The Richland County Sheriff's Department responded to the comedy club and has since opened an investigation, according to TMZ.

FOX 5 has reached out to the Richland County Sheriff's Department for comment and has yet to hear back.
