I-66 reopens after traffic nightmare

A single-car crash along busy eastbound I-66 caused a traffic nightmare during evening rush hour Wednesday after it struck a sign post.

Road crews worked into the night to take down a sign post over the eastbound lanes on Interstate 66 near Route 28 in Centreville following a single-vehicle crash Wednesday afternoon.

Virginia State Police say they received calls about a Toyota Corolla driving recklessly in the westbound lanes of I-66 at around 1:45 p.m.

When a state trooper pulled up behind the car police say he activated his patrol vehicle's lights and sirens to initiate a traffic stop but the Toyota driver refused to stop and eventually was forced to stop in the travel lanes.

Police say during this time, the trooper noticed a Kia run off the left side of the interstate and continue into the median where it hit the sign post. The impact of the crash caused the car to catch fire.

The trooper exited his cruiser and directed the Toyota's driver to pull over and park before running to aid the Kia driver, police say.

Eventually, the trooper arrested the driver of the Toyota. The driver has been identified as Jordan L. Golladay of Manassas. They have been charged with DUID and driving on a suspended license.

Meanwhile, the driver of the Kia, identified as Andrea Nunez, of Manassas, was treated at the scene for minor injuries. The cause of her crash remains under investigation, according to police. Charges are currently pending.

The work created traffic gridlock for hours and eastbound traffic was diverted onto Rt. 29 during that time. The road has since reopened.
