Metro riders using the Green and Yellow lines will likely have their commute take a little longer than normal Friday morning.

Crews will be conducting unscheduled track work starting Thursday night into Friday morning because of a possible rail defect discovered outside of the Columbia Heights station. Metro said the repair is complex and they plan on replacing about 100 feet of rail to help resolve the problem.

As the repairs continue into the morning, Green Line trains will single track between the U Street and Georgia Ave-Petworth stations through the Friday morning rush. Green Line trains will also run less frequently than normal and Metro said riders should expect overcrowding at stations while allowing for more time for your commute.

On the Yellow line, trains will run normally, but the line will run between Huntington and Mt Vernon Square rather than Fort Totten.

Metro is also advising riders to consider alternate travel options to ease congestion.
