Underground transformer fire causes power issues in downtown DC

Utility crews cut power to an area of downtown D.C. overnight as firefighters worked to control an underground transformer fire.

The fire happened around 11:50 p.m. Monday night in the area of 18th Street and L Street in the northwest.

Video posted by fire officials showed thick, black smoke and bright orange flames rising through underground ventilation grates on the street.

No injuries were reported. Utility crews may need to keep power disconnected late into the afternoon.
