Elderly couple dead in murder-suicide on trail in Reston: police

BETHESDA - An elderly couple was found dead on a trail in Reston in a murder-suicide according to Fairfax County Police.

Police confirmed with FOX 5's Jacqueline Matter that an elderly couple was found shot dead near a popular trail in Reston. A spokesperson for Fairfax County police said they believe it was a murder-suicide.

Police responded to the area of Players Pond Lane in Reston for a death investigation after a man and a woman were found unconscious on a trail nearby around 3:00 p.m. Wednesday. Herndon Police also received a call at 3:20 p.m. for a welfare check at the couple's home on the 600 block of Austin Lane.

Patricia Garverick, 69, and Richard Garverick, 75, were both found with gunshot wounds to the upper torso. The couple was declared dead at the scene.

Detectives believe Richard shot his wife, Patricia, before shooting himself.
