Towson shooting: 1 dead, 9 remain hospitalized after mass shooting outside funeral home

TOWSON, Md. - Authorities say nine people remain hospitalized after a deadly mass shooting outside a Towson funeral home.

The shooting happened around 7:15 p.m. in the 8500 block of Loch Raven Boulevard near White Oak Avenue.

Officers responding to the call found a vehicle on its side and in flames when they arrived. Police located 10 people suffering from injuries. Nine victims were transported to nearby trauma centers. Authorities say the majority of those transported suffered gunshot wounds. One of those shot was pronounced dead at the scene.

Shooting appears to be targeted

Baltimore County Police Department Chief Robert McCullough spoke at a press conference Tuesday night and said officers are investigating multiple crimes scene locations. "We know that there’s some additional scenes that we’re investigating right now were other gunfire took place throughout the neighborhood and that was evidenced by the multiple calls for service from the neighbors who were calling 911 about the gunshots in the community."

McCullough said detectives are still investigating what led to the incident that caused the vehicle crash and fire. He also said the incident appears to be targeted. "It appears that the individuals in this case somehow knew one another and this incident was intentional and targeted toward the individuals that were involved in this incident."

The crash and shootings happened outside the Johnson-Fosbrink Funeral Home however the business was closed at the time of the incident. The facade of the building was struck by multiple gunshots, McCullough said.

The ages of the victims are unknown, and it is unclear if any weapons have been recovered. Shell casings were found on the ground at the scene. It is not known if there was more than one shooter and it is unclear if anyone was in the vehicle when the police arrived. McCullough said detectives will review all available surveillance footage to reconstruct a timeline of events.

Witnesses sought, reward offered

"We will leave no stone unturned, and we will dedicate every resource to this. We don’t generally see this type of thing in our communities in Baltimore County. This is an isolated incident," McCullough said.

"This is an incident that is shocking," said Baltimore County Executive John Olszewski. "These types of incidents are unheard of here and so it really shocks the conscious."
