WASHINGTON (FOX 5 DC) - A teenage boy is fighting for his life after he was shot along with another person in Northeast D.C.
The shooting happened at 54th Street and Blaine Street just after 2:20 p.m. on Friday, according to police.
D.C. Police Chief Peter Newsham says an officer in the area responded to the scene after hearing several gunshots. The officer located a 14-year-old boy and a man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
The teenager was taken to the hospital in critical condition while the other victim suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
Both victims were inside a vehicle that had "a heavy tint" and it appears the vehicle was targeted, the police chief says.
A GMC SUV with several bullet holes along the exterior and windshield was seen towed away from the scene.
According to D.C. police's crime data, there have been 159 homicides in the city this year - a 39 percent increase from 2017.
"We are all concerned when we see the homicides rise like this," said Newsham. "I don't know if you know this or not, but our lethality of our shootings have actually increased pretty significantly this year. So our number of shootings has remained about the same from year to year. But the lethality has increased, which indicates the weapons are more sophisticated."
