Teen arrested after 3 injured in Alexandria shooting

ALEXANDRIA, Va. - A teenager has been arrested after three people were shot in Alexandria on Thursday just blocks from the site of the Congressional Baseball practice shooting, according to police.

The shootings happened at around 12:46 p.m. in the 400 block of E. Howell Avenue, according to authorities. Neighbors told FOX 5 three people were inside a car when they were shot.

"I was inside and I heard bang, bang, bang. At first, I thought it was construction or something but then I actually heard the car crash and I came outside to look and a bunch of people were out here. One guy got out of the car and was on the ground screaming," neighbor Milo Devereus told FOX 5.

Police said the 17-year-old suspect, an Alexandria City resident, has been charged with malicious wounding.

As a precaution, authorities placed a lockdown on Mount Vernon Community School, Matthew Maury Elementary School, George Washington Middle School and Central Office. The lockdown was lifted at about 1:55 p.m., officials stated.

Police believed the suspect in the shootings knew the victims.

The area of the 400 block of E. Howell Avenue was closed as officers investigated the scene.

Authorities originally said they believed the incident to be a retaliation shooting, but later clarified it was too early in their investigation to make that determination.
