ARLINGTON, Va. - A hostage situation at an Arlington Wells Fargo ended with no one being hurt Tuesday, and police have a suspect from North Carolina in custody.
Arlington County police said the five people — four adults and one child — who were being held hostage for nearly an hour safely exited the bank.
Around 4:30 p.m., officers ordered the man who had barricaded himself inside the bank to come out. And eventually, they said, he complied. No injuries were reported. And thus far, police have not found a weapon.
Oscar Gonzalez Allarenja, 30, of Durham, North Carolina has been charged with bank robbery and abduction.
At 3:09 p.m., the Arlington County Police Department said it received a call about an armed robbery at the Wells Fargo bank in the Clarendon neighborhood.
When officers arrived at the scene in the 3100 block of Washington Boulevard, they realized Allarenja was still inside the bank holding employees and patrons hostage.
Police said the suspect told employees he had a weapon when he entered the bank, grabbed one of them, and demanded they hand over money.
A spokesperson for Wells Fargo sent FOX 5 a statement saying, "The safety and security of our customers and employees is our most important priority, and we are incredibly relieved and grateful that the situation has been resolved with no physical injuries to any of our employees or customers. We are appreciative of the work of the Arlington Police Department in reaching a peaceful resolution and will continue to do everything we can to assist authorities as they investigate the situation."
Police said no cash was reported stolen.
Allarenja is now being held without bond in the Arlington County Detention Facility.
