WASHINGTON - The Supreme Court ended constitutional protections for abortion Friday more than a month after the stunning leak of a draft opinion by Justice Samuel Alito indicated they were prepared to take the historic step.

The decision by the court's conservative majority overturned the landmark Roe v. Wade ruling and is expected to lead to abortion bans in roughly half the states.

DC resident "voluntarily sterilized" ahead of Supreme Court ruling

Supporters and foes of abortion rights had been gathering outside the court on days the court releases opinions since the leak.

Abortion foes cheered the ruling, while abortion-rights supporters, including President Joe Biden, pledged to fight to restore the rights. Speaking from the White House, Biden called the abortion ruling 'a sad day' for country.
