The Supreme Court ended constitutional protections for abortion Friday more than a month after the stunning leak of a draft opinion by Justice Samuel Alito indicated they were prepared to take the historic step.

DC resident "voluntarily sterilized" ahead of Supreme Court ruling

Stephanie Ramirez speaks with a DC resident who stated that they got their fallopian tubes removed voluntarily a few weeks ago in anticipation of the Supreme Court's decision on Dobbs V. Jackson, the ruling that overturns Roe V. Wade which legalized abortion in 1973.

FOX 5's Chief Legal Correspondent Katie Barlow broke the news from outside the Supreme Court building Friday morning.

Supporters and foes of abortion rights had been gathering outside the court on days the court releases opinions since the leak.

Abortion foes cheered the ruling, while abortion-rights supporters, including President Joe Biden, pledged to fight to restore the rights. Speaking from the White House, Biden called the abortion ruling 'a sad day' for country.

A demonstrator scaled the Frederick Douglass Bridge in Washington, D.C. following the Supreme Court decision overturning Roe v. Wade.

Former President Donald Trump praised the court decision overturning Roe v. Wade, telling FOX News that the ruling "will work out for everybody." Former President Barack Obama condemned the decision.

On Friday, crowds of protestors grew considerably outside of the court following the announcement.

Elsewhere in D.C., a demonstrator scaled the Frederick Douglass Bridge waving a flag and unfurling a large green banner.

The Supreme Court has ended constitutional protections for abortion that had been in place nearly 50 years in a decision by its conservative majority to overturn Roe v. Wade. Friday's outcome is expected to lead to abortion bans in roughly half the states.
