PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY, Md. (FOX 5 DC) - Suitland High School is on lockdown after police say a student was shot on school grounds and a 14-year-old has been arrested.
The shooting was reported around 10 a.m. outside the school in the 5200 block of Silver Hill Road in Prince George's County.
Police Chief Aziz Malik says a group of students gathered during a transitional period and a verbal altercation ensued which turned physical.
Chief Malik says someone produced a weapon and fired it, striking a 14-year-old student.
The assigned school resource officers were onsite and rendered emergency care to the victim. He has been hospitalized and police say he is in stable condition.

Accounts of the incident from other students who were present gave police enough information to arrest a 14-year-old male.
The school is currently on lockdown. School officials say they believe the shooting was an isolated incident and that there is no threat to the community.
