Students mourn loss of teen killed in car accident

Students gathered at Lake Braddock Secondary School Sunday to mourn the loss of a fellow student killed in a weekend car accident.

18-year-old Laween Akrawi was killed Friday in an accident along Franconia Springfield Parkway near Interstate-95.

Officers believe Akrawi was driving westbound when he lost control of his vehicle and drove off the road, striking several trees.

A 17-year-old passenger who was in the vehicle suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

The burial and funeral service for Akrawi was held on Sunday afternoon. Later that evening, students memorialized Akrawi by placing candles and mementoes in his school parking spot.

"I recommend everyone - seat belts, safety, no speeding. Life is short. Speed was a factor," said Beri Dosky, a family friend who spoke with FOX 5.

The school said staff members will be available Monday to speak with any students in need of support.
