LOUDOUN COUNTY, Va. (FOX 5 DC) - A Loudoun County high school student is in custody after authorities say he assaulted a school resource officer Thursday afternoon.
According to the Loudoun County Sheriff's Office, the incident happened at Dominion High School at around 1 p.m. when a member of the school's administrative staff was attempting to get the student to go to the office from the cafeteria.
During the incident, authorities say the student refused to go multiple times and eventually assaulted a staff member. That's when the LCSO school resource officer approached the student and "attempted to calm him down."
Authorities say the student "turned and assaulted the deputy," which led to the deputy "defending himself while taking the student into custody."
The deputy was transported to a local hospital for treatment. Meanwhile, the student, who authorities say refused medical treatment, was taken to the Loudoun Juvenile Detention Center.
Principal John Brewer released the following statement about the incident Thursday evening:
"Earlier today, our SRO was assaulted by a Dominion High School student. The assault occurred during lunch in the cafeteria. Many of our students witnessed it. Because this matter involves possible action by law enforcement, I cannot offer further details. I am reaching out to ask you to remind your student to be respectful of school staff at all times."
