Shots fired in Bowie home with children inside

Police are investigating a Bowie home after shots were fired on Tuesday afternoon.

A shelter-in-place order has been lifted after 'police activity' in Bowie drew a large emergency response on Tuesday afternoon.

In a post to X just before 12:45 p.m., the Bowie Police Department alerted the public to some type of situation in a residential area near Sudberry Lane and Spangler Lane. Authorities did not provide any details about what the response was related to.

"Please stay clear of this area. If you are currently in the area, please stay inside your residence," the post said.

‘Stay Clear’: Police activity in Bowie; residents advised to stay inside homes

Authorities in Bowie are asking residents to stay inside their homes, and others to stay clear, as officers respond to an unknown situation in the area of Sudberry Lane and Spangler Lane.

SKYFOX was over the scene where several police cruisers and an ambulance were seen on neighborhood streets in the area. Some officers were out of their vehicles.

It was later learned that shots were fired in the Bowie home with children inside and a neighboring home in what police described as a critical incident. Police say the male suspect and a female inside the home were suffering a mental episode.

Bowie police chief Dwayne Preston provided an update during a news conference around 3 p.m. Chief Preston says both the male suspect and female suspect do know each other and both lived inside the home. 

According to police, two of seven people who were inside the home when this unfolded. Police say the call initially came in as a home invasion after a witness reportedly spotted the suspect breaking into the home.

Chief Preston says while officers were removing residents, the suspect ran out of the home with a rifle. He was ordered to put down his weapon and complied. Officers were able to safely remove the people inside, including at least three children.
