CLINTON, Md. (FOX 5 DC) -- Two county sources confirmed to FOX 5 that Amazon is planning to occupy a nearly 700,000 square-foot logistics center in Upper Marlboro at the Westphalia Town Center.
Monday night neighbors voiced their opinions on the warehouse, many opposing the project because it was outside the bounds of the shopping and amenities originally planned for the site near the Suitland Parkway and Pennsylvania Avenue.
The developer, Walton and Duke Realty, which will own the property, held a question and answer session for the Westphalia Town Center homeowner's association.
Neighbors asked about how traffic and their home values would be impacted by the addition of the warehouse and what plans were in place to mitigate noise. Many expressed their disappointment that they weren't asked to weigh in earlier on the project before being told it was planned for their neighborhood.
Walton has said the merchandise logistics center will bring 1,500 good jobs to the county and spur additional development.
"The logistics center that's planned for Westphalia Town Center is really just a rare and unique opportunity for Prince George's County. It will be the catalyst for the much needed retail at Westphalia Town Center. Just in the past week, I've gotten three different calls from local retailers and local retail developers," said Ed Fleming, president East Region for Walton.
Nearly two weeks ago, the county's planning board voted to amend the site plan to include the four-story warehouse which will operate 24/7 and is expected to bring in 150 trucks per day, according to Walton.
Walton says beginning in the fall, construction is planned to improve traffic infrastructure and there are plans for barriers between the site and nearby homes.
There are still more steps before the warehouse is approved. Neighbors will be able to voice concerns again at a planning board meeting set for 9:30 a.m., but it appears the Westphalia item is slated to be discussed later in the day, according to the agenda.
